Description
This final image in the Nakalele Blowhole series was taken at sunrise, standing on the rugged cliffs of Maui’s north shore. The morning sky was filled with thick clouds, and I wasn’t sure if the sun would break through. But just above the horizon, a small gap opened enough to let in brilliant red light that reflected across the Pacific.
By blending multiple exposures, I was able to balance the scene: a longer exposure softened the water, pulling out the glow in the reflection, while a shorter frame preserved the detail and structure in the sky and clouds. Together they create an image that feels both powerful and serene.
It was a lucky moment, a reminder that even when conditions look uncertain, sunrise on Maui can deliver fleeting brilliance.
This photograph is part of my Nakalele Blowhole Coastal Series, capturing the dramatic moods of Maui’s north shore. From fiery sunset to storm-filled dusk, from calm sunrise to rugged rock and tidepool detail, these four perspectives reveal the shifting character of this volcanic coastline.
