While scouting this coastline earlier in the day, we didn’t expect much of a sunset. My family and friends had joined me at Nakalele Blowhole, and as the sun began to sink, the clouds thickened with little sign of color. But just as the last sliver of sun dipped below the horizon, the sky erupted.
The building storm clouds came alive in golden-red hues, washing the cliffs and water in radiant light. For a few brief minutes, everything the ocean, the sky, the atmosphere itself turned shades of red and orange. The sharp volcanic rocks in the foreground glowed with reflected warmth, anchoring the scene against the shifting drama overhead.
It was a fleeting moment, but one that captured the full energy of Maui’s north shore: rugged, unpredictable, and breathtaking when it all comes together.
